Summer Algebra Course

Maths6 are offering a fantastic new course over the summer months. Whilst teachers enjoy a very well-deserved summer break the Maths6 team will be very busy preparing the next generation of A-level Maths students. ‘PREPARING FOR A-LEVEL MATHS’ is a bespoke course developed by A-level specialist tutors. The course is targeted at Y11 school leavers who are planning to enrol for A-level Maths at Sixth Form College in September 2021. The course has been specifically designed to enhance and develop algebra and reasoning skills, all carefully scaffolded and delivered by experienced and expert A-level Maths tutors.

The course consists of 5 one-hour small group tutorials that students will attend in groups of up to 10. The course will be delivered via MICROSOFT TEAMS. Students will attend a 1 hour-tutorial each day over the course of a week, from Monday to Friday. Each day the course will look to develop/enhance a different algebraic skill essential to help prepare maths students for their A-level study. Each tutorial is backed up with a 1 hour directed learning activity/task which is directly connected to the session content.

The five skills developed are:

Session 1: Building connections between equations and coordinates by linking the visual with the concrete
Session 2: Developing a deeper understanding of function notation
Session 3: Developing solution strategies for solving simultaneous equations by substitution
Session 4: Extending mathematical substitution as a strategy for solving a range of equations, from linear equations upwards
Session 5: Developing the use of standard notation for a range of expressions which involve fractional indices

Course Cost

The cost of the course is £40 per student. This is exceptional value for a total of 10 guided learning hours (equivalent to just £4 per hour!!).

GCSE Results Day

If you are waiting to see what your GCSE results are before deciding whether to enrol for this course then remember that GCSE RESULTS DAY this summer has been brought forward to 12th August 2021. This will most likely mean an earlier than usual enrolment day for school sixth forms and sixth form colleges. This will potentially leave a two week window between enrolment and the start of term in September. So for those who are waiting to see their GCSE grades before deciding on their A-level choices then this window could be the ideal time to attend the course in readiness for starting A-level Maths in September.
